2021 LEGO Monkie Kid Sets Review – Part 2

Last week, we discussed three of the smallest sets from the 2021 LEGO Monkie Kid collection; the #40472 LEGO Monkie Kid’s RC Race, the #80018 LEGO Monkie Kid’s Cloud Bike, and the #80019 LEGO Monkie Kid Red Son’s Inferno Jet. Today, we will take a look at two of the larger sets; the #80020 LEGO Monkie Kid White Dragon Horse Jet, and the #80023 LEGO Monkie Kid’s Team Dronecopter.

One of the main characters of the Monkie Kid cartoon is Mei, who is well known for her fondness of dragons, horses, and dragon horses, and that her favorite colors are white, green, and gold. She got a cool bike in the #80006 LEGO Monkie Kid White Dragon Horse Bike last year (still available), and this year, she impresses us with another one of her awesome rides, the #80020 LEGO Monkie Kid White Dragon Horse Jet. I have to say that this is one of the most strikingly beautiful aircrafts LEGO ever released. Both the shaping and the color-scheme are fantastic. And this is particularly impressive as most of the coloring and shaping are achieved with some very interesting brick-built techniques. Very few stickers are used for the jet.

And this aircraft isn’t just meant to be pretty. It comes with 2 spring-loaded shooters and 2 stud-shooters to deliver some serious fire power. And it also has some neat customization options with adjustable wings and flaps to make it look faster and sleeker or more dragon-like. The overall size of the jet is over 3 in. (8 cm) high, 13.5 in. (34 cm) long, and 7.5 in. (19 cm) wide. It feels really good in hand and very swoosh-able!

Besides Mei’s sleek jet, this set offers several add-ons; a working vending machine (similar to the one we got in the #70657 Ninjago City Docks, a poseable robotic spider, and a stud-shooting hoverboard for Mo the cat. The story is that Mei and Mo are battling to save a civilian from the Spider Queen’s Huntsman assisted by the robotic spider.

LEGO Monkie Kid 2021 Sets Review 4

Overall, this is a fantastic set that younger builders will enjoy for the playability, and older builders will appreciate for the sophisticated building techniques. I really have nothing negative to say about it, and at $49.99, even the price is right. Below, I have included a detailed review of the set by JANGBRiCKS, and if you want to check it out, it’s available at the LEGO Monkie Kid section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The #80023 LEGO Monkie Kid’s Team Dronecopter is a much larger set with 1,462 pieces for the price of $149.99. The main attraction is the super cool and colorful Drone Copter, measuring over 7.5 in. (19cm) high, 15.5 in. (39 cm) long and 15.5 in. (39 cm) wide.

As the name implies, this airship is shaped like a drone or hovercraft, with Sandy the bigfig operating the turret on top. It also appears that Sandy can pilot the dronecopter from above, as the main cockpit below can detach as a separate vehicle. This is a very similar setup as in the #80008 LEGO Monkie Kid’s Cloud Jet from last year (still available).

Another similarity with the cloud jet is that the dronecopter is handheld from the back, so kids can easily whoosh it around, position the turret with a knob, and engage the 2 spring-loaded shooters. I really like handheld jets like these, as they fit really good in human hands without fear of dropping the vehicle or knocking anything off.

The dronecopter isn’t just meant for shooting badguys. It can also carry cargo containers. Three of these containers are included with the set; two for the good guys, and one (purple) for the baddies. The cargo containers for the good guys feature similar living quarters as the containers in the #80013 LEGO Monkie Kid’s Team Secret HQ. In fact, if you already have that set, you can add these smaller containers on the cargo ship. I particularly like the arcade machine, but what I don’t like is the number of stickers that need to be applied to the containers (of course, you can just leave them off).

The purple cargo container hides a canon with 2 spring-loaded shooters. As the color-scheme and decorations suggest, it belongs to the Spider Queens team of baddies. Red Son is also featured on a hover-board that’s practically on fire! It’s a lot less practical than the canon, but hey, it looks cool.

The set comes with a total of ten characters: Monkie Kid, Mei, Mr. Tang, Huntsman, Syntax, Red Son, Spider Queen, Fei, Sandy the bigfig and Mo the cat.

In the video-review below, you can see the set in more detail, and if you are interested, it’s available at the LEGO Monkie Kid section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Overall, I feel that some of the larger LEGO Monkie Kid sets like the #80023 LEGO Monkie Kid’s Team Dronecopter we talked about here, the large mechs from the previous wave, the cargo ship headquarters and some of the other large sets are just too big for play and display. And I’m saying this as an adult. They would look even more enormous to a kid. I’m not saying don’t buy them, but I would suggest watching a couple of review videos to give you an idea how big they actually are. I was certainly surprised by their size, and eventually took them apart because they were just so big and awkward.

In general, I prefer the medium size sets, like the #80020 LEGO Monkie Kid White Dragon Horse Jet, and the #80019 LEGO Monkie Kid Red Son’s Inferno Jet we talked about last week. They have plenty of play-features without being too big, and they don’t take such a big financial commitment. The good thing is that LEGO Monkie Kid is a well-developed theme with plenty of sets to please every size preference and budget.
