LEGO named among TIME’s 100 most influential companies

TIME has named the LEGO Group among the world’s 100 most influential companies in its inaugural list of businesses shaping the future of society.

Editors, correspondents and industry experts all submitted nominations for the first ever TIME100 Most Influential Companies list, which also includes the likes of Roblox, Netflix and Nintendo. The news organisation then evaluated all the nominees using criteria such as relevance, leadership, innovation, impact, ambition and success.

The final list runs the gamut from enterprising start-ups to firmly-established industry veterans, split into distinct categories including pioneers, leaders, innovators, titans and disruptors. The LEGO Group falls squarely under the umbrella of ‘innovators’, a field it shares with TikTok, Duolingo, Spotify and Moderna, to name just a few.

Subheaded ‘fostering creativity’, Rebecca Katzman’s entry for the LEGO Group cites the company’s booming sales during the pandemic (up 21% year-on-year), alongside initiatives including Braille Bricks and ‘hybrid learning resources’ (presumably LEGO Education).

The LEGO Group’s CEO Niels B. Christiansen told TIME: “I have never gotten so many letters… [about] how important LEGO play has been.” The numbers tell a similar story: the company’s revenue increased by 13% year-on-year in 2020, totalling an eye-watering 43.7 billion DKK (approximately £4.95 billion).

Its latest accolade comes just two weeks after Reptrak named the LEGO Group the most reputable company in the world for the second year in a row.
